As with most countries the range of American mattress and bed sizes available is pretty large to cater for all sizes of people and their preferences. This article will bring you each variant along with its dimensions and use, to hopefully provide a little clarity for when it comes time for you to decide which size bed and mattress is right for you. Please note that the first set of dimensions is in inches and the dimensions shown in brackets are in centimeters. The dimensions in inches have been round up or down to the nearest full number.

Starting with the smallest then…

Crib or Toddler – Measuring 27 x 51 (69 x 131). The obvious use for the smallest bed is for very young children and babies, typically made with a “fenced” surround to prevent the toddler falling or climbing out.

Cot or Mini Single – 30 x 70 (76 x 178). This is not a common size in the United States although may be found in some locations. It is simply a longer version of the crib.

Modern Cot– 30 x 74 (76 x 188) – This is the United States front-runner in this range and is slightly longer than the cot or Mini Single. Again, used for infants until they outgrow the size.

Twin – 38 x 75 (95 x 189) This is the standard size twin bed in the United States and is typically used as your child grows through their early years and in to early adult hood.

Twin XL – 38 x 80 (95 x 203) – This is a slightly larger version of the twin and arguably a better investment as it provides 5 inches more length, handy for those teenage years as your child’s development is unpredictable and that extra leg length may well be required.

Full – 54 x 75 (137 x 191). This is the smaller variant of the full bed with a Full XL – 53 x 80 (135 x 203) available that provides an additional 5 inches in length. They can both be used by a couple but can be a little cramped for space. This size is more commonly used in the United Kingdom where homes are smaller.

Queen – 60 x 80 (152 x 203). This is the most common size of American mattress today                and the option to buy a slightly wider version, Olympic Queen that measures 66 x 80 (168 x 203). The “queen” is a good size for couples to sleep with the additional width on offer. There is also a wood framed California Queen in circulation but these are becoming very rare to find.

The biggest in the American mattress range is the “king”, of which there is a number of options.

Eastern King – 76 × 80 (193 × 203)

California King – 72 × 84 (183 × 213)

San Francisco King – 84 × 84 (213 × 213)

The king size range is as good as it gets for beds and if you have a large bedroom these make a superb option as they will provide all the room you need to roll over time and time again with disturbing your partner.
